Our growing South Shore community welcomed hundreds of visitors to Highlands Park on a glorious October day, with families taking the chance to hang out in the sun while the sounds of bluegrass music floated on the air. It was a day to use all your senses as the sights, smells and sounds of the season were presented, while children could ride a pony or touch a tortoise.

Of course, October wouldn’t be the same without pumpkins. They were a familiar sight all through the festival, either on stalls or being turned into works of art at the Pumpkin Painting stand. Kids were encouraged to be creative and decorate a carefully chosen pumpkin before getting busy with a paintbrush, kindly allowing their parents to carry the finished article for the rest of the event.

Ponies were also popular, a constant queue of tiny riders eager to get in the saddle and trot adjacent to the future home location of Parkview Place and The Cottages at Hollybrook, while two llamas looked haughtily on from the safety of their enclosure. There were chances to stroke a snake or to stop a spiny-backed tortoise from escaping, the latter activity not planned as such, but he was either trying to make a break for it or get to Cupcake Mojo before they sold out of their delicious treats.

To be fair, it wouldn’t be a SouthField event without food, and, yet again, the local cooking community delivered. There was pizza from Ecco Trattoria, real BBQ sandwiches from Tennessee BBQ, ice cream from Heidi Hollow, hot chowder from Summer Shack, while Dane from REI happily prepared mushroom risotto.

If there is food, you need a beverage to wash it down and what goes better with BBQ or pizza than beer? Peak Organic Brewery showcased its latest range of locally inspired brews, including the Fall Summit Ale and the ever- reliable IPA, a perfect drink on a sunny day in SouthField. For anyone who didn’t fancy celebrating the fact that it was five o’clock somewhere, Black Magic Coffee were providing lattes and hot chocolate, although some were more than content with several shots of a Bolivian espresso.

And because we were celebrating the changing of the seasons, we needed to do it to the sound of music. To officially welcome fall, we went bluegrass.

Chasing Blue are five Berkeley School of Music alumni who love the banjo and the violin, traditional musical instruments that have been a part of American culture and community for decades. A professional touring band, they provided a rhythmic backdrop to the event, entertaining the crowd with a succession of indie folk songs and bluegrass versions of popular songs, including a foot-tapping version of Long Tall Sally that breathed fresh life into an old classic.

BBQ, beer, bluegrass, coffee, cupcakes and painting pumpkins. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon, all in the company of the SouthField community and under a bright October sun. That’s why we celebrate fall.

CNN/Money Magazine has recently ranked Weymouth as the 87th best small town in America, using used a series of statistics and analytical data to determine 100 towns that would be perfect for families, ranking services in the community alongside entertainment and opportunities for growth.

To produce their list, it considered a number of factors from towns with a population of no less than 50,000 and not exceeding 300,000. They looked at education, income and crime statistics, while excluding communities that had a large number of retirees.

Once they had done that, the next step was to look at tangible aspects of living: job growth, home affordability, safety, school quality, health care, arts and leisure, diversity and several ease-of-living criteria. They pondered the wider picture, the fiscal health of the state and intangible qualities such as resident happiness and community spirit.

Then they crunched the numbers, studied the data and ranked the towns from 1 to 100. Proudly coming in at Number 87, Weymouth was one of four towns in Massachusetts (Brookline, Framingham, Newton) that made the list.

Of course, the over 400 residents already living at SouthField are well aware of Weymouth attractiveness within the South Shore, but CNN kindly reproduced some facts for its readers. They kicked off with an easy one, revealing that Weymouth is “the second oldest city in the Commonwealth,”.

But did you know that Weymouth was the home of Abigail Adams? Or that one of its main streets used to be trod on a regular basis by Native Americans? Or that the heart of Boston is a 30-minute drive away – unless you use the commuter rail!

Fifty-four thousand people live in the Weymouth, the educational system is above the national average, and there are 5,184 restaurants within 15 miles of the town!

So there we are. SouthField is part of the 87th best small town in America and, according to Bonnie Goldstein – a long-term Weymouth resident and one of the smiling faces that greets you at the SouthField Welcome Center – the reason for this is obvious.

“Weymouth offers so many wonderful things,” she says. “Proximity to Boston and Cape Cod, public transit, great schools and beautiful parks, reasonable real estate prices, convenient shopping locations but the more important asset in my opinion, is the people who live here.”

A sunny evening in SouthField, the smell of avocados being grilled, cold summer ale, hot pizza, oysters and the sounds of brass instruments wafting over the breeze. We promised to treat your senses and we hope we delivered on that pledge.

SouthField Highlands Park was the venue for the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet to play a selection of classic Americana that had feet tapping and heads nodding. Nestled on the lawn against a backdrop of our new homes and apartments, the grass was filled with deck chairs as art lovers and concert goers made the most of another beautiful day in our little slice of South Weymouth.

The selection of local art to view featured a range of art forms to admire, from oils to stainless steel sculptures. Four local artists displayed their work that showcased visions of New England and mixed media collages that brought back childhood memories.

Gints Grinberg, whose Caledonian-inspired sculptures are an integral part of SouthField Highland Park, exhibited more stunning examples of his talent while he ate as much ice-cream as possible! His organic style and attention to form are evident in his metal-stone creations, greeting SouthField residents daily as they make their way around the vertical park.

The main event was the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra quintet, a perfect accompaniment to the senses. Playing a selection of patriotic classics, jazz, swing, New Orleans blues and even the odd show tune, the five band members used the natural acoustics of the space to fill the air with the sound of brass. They moved through their musical gears with an impressive demonstration of unplugged aural delights that drew heavily on the ability of brass band music to inspire people to march.

Tunes that were popular in the Civil War kicked off the evening while the band acknowledged veterans in the audience with an Armed Forces salute. Led by the engaging Jobey Wilson, they looked as if they were enjoying the chance to strut their stuff in the evening air with Tonight from West Side Story an unexpected (and welcome) demonstration of what a brass instrument can do.

“It’s our first time to SouthField and I love it,” said Wilson, as the crowd began to pack up their deckchairs. “This is a beautiful and amazing area, it’s going to be a hidden jewel.”

“We’re very pleased with the reaction, it seems they recognized a lot of the songs and that was our goal. We wanted to make a program of familiar music and we wanted to put on a show that was reminiscent of the ‘old town band’ concept. Marches, patriotic music and some swing to get people dancing. People like what they recognize.”

The Vineyard Vines tent couldn’t have summed it up any better: “Every day should feel this good.”

Communities come in all shapes and sizes. One dictionary definition describes it as “a body of people sharing locality,” which fits in perfectly with the aims and ambitions of SouthField.

In many ways, SouthField is a unique community. It exists as a thoughtful master-planned mix of uses, but is part of the larger South Weymouth community, and in the bigger picture, part of the South Shore. If we were to define SouthField in terms of its place in the region, it could almost be described as a collection of pocket neighborhoods.

But in order to do that we need to clarify what a ‘pocket neighborhood’ is. The concept is gaining traction as the desire to be part of a smaller-scale community has become increasingly popular.

According to an article in The Boston Globe in 2005, the pocket neighborhood is designed to “beautify and define the area”, while Wikipedia defines it as “a grouping of smaller residences designed to promote a close knit sense of community and neighborliness with an increased level of contact.”

One architect has described it as “creating small scale community in a large scale world.”

The theory can certainly be applied to SouthField, where each part of the community has a unique identity and a range of options for interaction, from parks to pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and trails. SouthField Highlands, the first neighborhood, already has its own particular vibe and its residents are very happily living in a neighbor-friendly environment, whether they’ve chosen to live in single-family homes, townhomes, or apartments. The beautifully-landscaped SouthField Highlands Park runs nearly the length of the clustered neighborhood, and provides a green focal community point for all.

Ultimately, smaller-scale pocket neighborhoods are sustainable developments, where there is a chance for residents to co-exist in a natural space as an alternative to the fast pace of city living. John Dernback, author of An Agenda for a Sustainable America, said, “Sustainable development is among the most important ideas to come out of the 20th century – and it may be in the long run the most important. It deserves that label because it provides a framework for humans to live and prosper in harmony with nature rather than as we have for centuries at natures expense.”

At SouthField, we believe in sustainability and are passionate about community. We are more than just one pocket neighborhood, we are several that fit seamlessly into a thoughtful Master Plan. Each one of those will be able to provide the networks of social and personal support that people need on a daily basis.

After all, isn’t that what neighbors are for?

Enter (l-r) Karen, Alexis, Bonnie & Mary.

They are where SouthField really begins.

Inside the SouthField Welcome Center you will find everything you need about the master-planned community: photographs, bright life-size displays, and info packages to get you started. A remarkable 3-D video shows you exactly why we are so excited about our master-planned community on the South Shore.

You will also meet our representatives. SouthField’s unofficial welcome party, they bring the development to life.

All four of our representatives live on the South Shore (one at SouthField and another in the process!). Alexis was born and raised here and now resides in Pembroke, Bonnie has been proud to call Weymouth her home for the last 36 years, Mary is one of SouthField’s first residents, and Karen may be a SouthField resident in the near future!

Alexis and Bonnie have been camped out at the Welcome Center since it was just a gleam in our eyes. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience, so it seemed only natural to ask them what they think of SouthField and their opinions on what makes SouthField such a unique place to work, relax and play.

Let’s start with an easy one. What makes SouthField so very special?

Bonnie: South Shore living offers natural beauty, history, diversity and culture. Add that to SouthField’s thoughtful master plan design, and it’s proximity to Boston, and you have a unique living opportunity.

Alexis: SouthField has attracted people with a similar mindset who desire to be a part of a community — something that has been virtually lost in the midst of our busy lifestyles. Getting back to the basics of community living and a neighbor friendly atmosphere, I believe, is one of the main reasons for the tremendous interest to live here.

Where do the majority of the people who pop into the Welcome Center come from?

Bonnie: They come from all over the Greater Boston area and the South Shore, but we also attract a number of people who have left the South Shore and want to return home.

Alexis: We even get inquires from people who were originally New Englanders and are considering moving to the first community of this type (transit-oriented development) in the region.

What do you think is a primary USP (Unique Selling Point)?

Bonnie: SouthField’s central location within the South Shore and the convenience of an adjacent Commuter Rail Station to the site — it’s a five-minute walk from our first neighborhood to the MBTA commuter train to Boston.

Alexis: SouthField is a Master Planned Community, with 1,400 acres to create neighborhoods of fabulous homes with upcoming amenities and conveniences — all within walking distance.

What else appears to make SouthField appealing to Welcome Center visitors?

Bonnie: SouthField will become a walking community. The plan is that you will be able to walk from your beautiful new home to the train station, the Village Square to shop, dine, exercise, see a movie, socialize with your friends and neighbors, play golf or watch a local team play a soccer game.

Alexis: The idea of walking to dinner, to a movie or to shop in the not too distant future is a wonderful way to stay active and go a bit green too. The need to drive will not be necessary. How nice is that? Also, the convenience of the commuter rail being so easily accessible is invaluable to the site.

What sort of reactions do you get from people during a tour?

Bonnie: (smiles) Very positive.

Alexis: I have been at the SouthField Welcome Center for over four years. When we first opened (the Center), we had only the concept and visual master plan to present to interested visitors. Since day one, visitors have shown tremendous excitement and interest in the community.

We have many new visitors that we greet at the Center daily along with many of our repeat guests that we have made good friends with over the years…whose interest has never faded! There were a lot of people waiting in the wings, and now that we can show them all the very real development at the Highlands neighborhood, the model homes see a steady flow of serious buyers. Our success was worth the wait…it’s just incredible! And SouthField is a great place to call “work.”

How important is the community to South Weymouth?

Bonnie: I think SouthField will have a very important economic impact on all three of the towns in which it is located — Weymouth, Abington and Rockland.

Alexis: Very significant. Not every town is fortunate enough to have an upgrade occur in their town as the SouthField community. SouthField is already bringing numerous jobs to the region, and we’re giving the local economy a fantastic jolt. SouthField’s new East-West Parkway connecting Route 18 to Route 3 will add life to the entire area.

What are your personal favorite parts of “New England with a twist”?

Bonnie: I like SouthField Highlands Park very much. It is lovely (and the perfect setting for all the fun events here at SouthField)!

Alexis: Being a lover of animals and wildlife, I absolutely love the way that all of SouthField’s neighborhoods will be surrounded by beautiful land area, much of it (1,000 acres) untouched or used for the recreation amenities.

Adds Alexis: The fact is that SouthField has drawn the interest of people in all age groups, which I believe adds to a much more interesting neighborhood with a healthier outlook on living.

As we finished our chat, the door opened and our greeters sprang into action. The Welcome Center is more than the just the first stop on the path to a new home or apartment, it is where we can tantalize the residential taste buds and bring the SouthField vision to life!

There is something inspiring about watching hundreds of people take to the roads for a race. On June 21, the first ever SouthField 5K saw 400 enthusiastic runners take their marks in sweltering heat and pound their way around the course.

We had been planning this event for some time. You may have seen flyers for the race when you arrived for your daily commute, especially if you are one of the sensible people that use the commuter rail or the ferry as a means to get into Boston from the South Shore.

If you ran the race on that sweltering Thursday night, you will know that, in the end, there was a very small hiccup in our master plan. Due to the heatwave that enveloped the region, the five kilometers was reduced down to just over three. This was recommended by the South Shore Hospital, eager to see that people enjoyed themselves and didn’t collapse from heat exhaustion.

This was a good call by our friends at the hospital. It was very hot at the Welcome Center, the paddling pools filled with iced water were being replenished on a regular basis and even those who weren’t lacing up their running shoes were perspiring slightly.

A shorter race meant that there was no official timing. There were some serious runners in the field and they wanted to complete the course as quickly as possible. If you compete on a regular basis, then posting a fast time (even over a shortened distance) is one of the reasons why you enter road races.

But not every one who lined up at the start was there to run fast. The race was just part of the overall entertainment package.

We provided lots of water, music, ice-cream and beer ;four staples of life! There were companies that provide renewable energy options, food from local vendors, representatives from the different aspects of SouthField Highlands (some of whom had even run the race!) and a perfect snapshot of what we are all about.

Here is a hint; it’s about community.

It is why we wanted to run the race, it was an open invitation to come and see why we love our piece of South Weymouth and why we believe that SouthField gives a unique twist on New England living.

The “elite” runners finished the course in just under fifteen minutes followed by a steady stream of (mainly) smiling joggers. Men, women and children all took the time to come down and have some fun in the sun. There were even some “competitors” who were happy to be pushed in their baby carriages as their parents ran the course, the sensible option on such a hot day.

Four hundred runners came over the finishing line and the inaugural SouthField 3.218K was over. It was the first race at the master-planned community but hopefully won’t be the last. The smiles on the faces of those enjoying the après-run entertainment was wonderful to see and testament to how much we enjoyed having you here.

We can’t promise that it will hot and sunny every day at SouthField but a community bands together whatever the weather. The energy of the runners matches what we are building in South Weymouth…that’s why the construction of a community is a marathon, not a sprint.

An influential German philosopher once said, “all truly great thoughts come from walking.” Frederich Nietzsche hit the nail squarely on the head in terms of the simplest form of exercise.

Walking is an activity with benefits and it gives you the time to think about them. As SouthField became a reality, one of the key elements of this master-planned community is the pace of life and making sure a pedestrian-friendly vibe is at forefront of our slice of the South Shore.

Being able to walk to the community facilities from your own home is one of the great joys of life; it lets you enhance your personal health without feeling rushed. That’s what we want to achieve at SouthField, for residents to meander at their own pace while the rest of the world rushes by.

A recent study by the Brookings Institution has shown that economic and personal well-being can be directly attributed to how “walkable” your community is. Being able to walk in urban space has become a coveted asset, as has the opportunity to cycle around a neighborhood.

This town was made for walking; you don’t need to take giant steps to get where you need to be — whether it’s your next door neighbor or the SouthField Links golf course, you’re only a short walk away.

As part of our commitment to Transit Oriented Design, the on-site MBTA commuter rail is easily walkable from the residences in SouthField Highlands and the village green that will be at the heart of the community is no more than a ten-minute stroll from any of the neighborhoods. Residents will be able to walk to Main Street to eat, drink and be merry!

According to the Brookings study, “biking and walking are part of a ‘complete streets’ strategy that public rights of ways should be for all of society – not just cars.” Walking is a civilized (and convenient) way to get to where you want to be; it’s the healthy alternative to getting behind the wheel.

There are financial advantages to taking a walk — you aren’t paying for gas when you walk to the on-site MBTA station and take the commuter train to work, and there’s less wear and tear on your car. Obviously, we are not looking to ban cars in SouthField but a pedestrian pace doesn’t mean that you have come to a complete stop. Walking can get the blood flowing and the heart pumping, it gives you the time to think and the chance to enjoy your surroundings.

At SouthField, you don’t have to take a walk on the wild side. The community has been designed to make the most of the natural surroundings and to provide the opportunity for residents to walk as much (or as little) as they want. There is a time and a place for walking; everywhere is within walking distance…if you have the time.
